In short: The words that Word ladder accepts, and the roots of From the root, rest on open language resources. They are listed here with their licences, and only what we actually used.
What we used
- Wiktionary, English and Arabic editions: Arabic entries, page titles and roots, through the kaikki.org extract (wiktextract). Licence CC BY-SA 4.0. “Wiktionary contributors, https://en.wiktionary.org”.
- Ayaspell Arabic dictionary (hunspell-ar 3.7, Mohamed Kebdani and Taha Zerrouki, as in the LibreOffice dictionaries): an independent witness that a spelling is a word. Licence GPL 2 / LGPL 2.1 / MPL 1.1, used as data, no code. ayaspell.sourceforge.net
- Arabic WordNet 2.0 through the Open Multilingual Wordnet. Licence CC BY-SA 3.0. (Black, Elkateb, Rodriguez, Alkhalifa, Vossen, Pease, Fellbaum, 2006; Abouenour, Bouzoubaa, Rosso, 2013 to 2015).
- FrequencyWords “ar_full” (Hermit Dave, from OpenSubtitles 2018): a minimum-use threshold only, never a source of words. Data CC BY-SA 4.0.
- wordfreq 3.1.1 (Robyn Speer): the Arabic frequency list, also a minimum-use threshold. Data CC BY-SA 4.0.
The resulting lists are plain words, and the notices of the sources are kept as they are. Nothing comes from the authors' memory.
